A few years ago, I would've been deeply sceptical if someone told me that lying still whilst electromagnetic pulses passed through my body could help with chronic pain, fatigue, or brain fog.


It sounds like pseudoscience, doesn't it? Or at best, some new-age wellness trend that'll be forgotten in six months.


But then I started paying attention to the research. And more importantly, I started paying attention to the people who were getting genuine, measurable relief from conditions that hadn't responded to anything else.


What I discovered was fascinating: PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy isn't new at all. It's been used in clinical settings for decades. NASA studied it for astronaut health. Orthopaedic surgeons use it to accelerate bone healing. And increasingly, it's becoming a cornerstone therapy for people dealing with chronic conditions that conventional medicine struggles to address.


Let me share what I've learnt about how it actually works and why it might be worth paying attention to.

What Actually Happens Inside Your Body

Here's something most of us don't think about: your body is fundamentally electrical.


Every heartbeat is triggered by electrical signals. Every thought in your brain is neurons firing electrically. Every time a muscle contracts, every time a cell decides to divide and heal, every time your immune system responds to a threat it's all electrical communication.

A meta-analysis of 14 randomised controlled trials found that PEMF significantly reduced pain in people with osteoarthritis, with effects lasting beyond the treatment period.[^2]


Another study on chronic lower back pain showed that PEMF reduced pain scores by an average of 60% after just two weeks of treatment.[^3]


But here's what's interesting: it's not just masking pain like a painkiller would. PEMF appears to reduce inflammation at the source. Research shows it decreases inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-alpha whilst increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines.[^4]


Translation? It's not just making you feel less pain; it's helping your body resolve the inflammation causing the pain in the first place.

This is where PEMF has the most established medical credibility. It's FDA-approved in the United States for bone healing, and orthopaedic surgeons routinely use it for fractures that won't heal on their own.

Studies show PEMF can accelerate bone healing by up to 30-40%.[^5] It does this by:

  • Increasing calcium ion movement (essential for bone formation)
